Email marketing is an essential part of every business’s marketing strategy. It gives you a direct line of contact to customers who want to hear from your business and is one of the most effective ways to drive sales.

We’ve previously covered why and how to get started with email marketing, but with the plethora of platforms available, how do you know which one is best for you?

This article will take an in-depth look at Squarespace Email Marketing and how it adds up in comparison to other email marketing platforms like Mailchimp, Convertkit, and Flodesk. Make sure you scroll to the end for our recommendations and summary!

Squarespace Email Marketing overview:

Squarespace first launched Squarespace Email Campaigns in 2018 and since then, they’ve made several tweaks to this marketing tool to create a more streamlined, efficient, and all-encompassing experience.

Squarespace Email Campaigns allow small business owners to grow and communicate with their audiences while staying true to their brands. It keeps all marketing endeavours in-house and makes email marketing a simple and beautiful process with templated emails, audience management, and marketing analytics.

Pricing: When you pay annually, Squarespace Email Campaigns start at just an additional $5/month but if you’d like to scale up according to your business needs, they have comprehensive packages at the $10/month tier, $24/month tier, and $48/month tier.

If you’re an existing Squarespace user, here are some pros and cons to staying within the platform and using their native email marketing manager.

Pros:

  • Keeping everything within the same platform

    • As an existing Squarespace user, keeping email marketing in the same platform allows you to streamline integrations and access any content that you have already previously uploaded

    • From a UX perspective, you’ve already learned the process of using templates and block-editors so drafting emails will be a breeze

  • Cheap (please reference prices here)

  • Beautiful designs and built-in templates

  • Intuitive to use

  • Email campaign scheduling is available

  • Provides campaign analytics

  • Amazing support! (One of the things we love about Squarespace!)

Cons:

  • Not as extensive as some other email marketing platforms

    • Because Squarespace Email Campaigns is still relatively new, its automation and segmentation capabilities are relatively basic. If you need advanced audience tagging or onboarding series for large audiences, this platform is probably not going to cut it.

  • Limited design capabilities

  • Hard send limits on emails per month

  • No A/B split testing

  • Deliverability varies

    • Squarespace Email Campaigns makes use of images and texts for beautiful campaigns but the tradeoff is that these rich emails are more likely to get caught in spam filters

Now let’s compare…

Mailchimp overview:

Mailchimp is an email marketing service that was created in 2001. It is wildly popular and probably most known for its low barrier to entry (free use for the first 2000 contacts)!

Pros:

  • Free version for small audiences!

  • Integrates easily with Squarespace (and many other platforms)

  • In-depth analytics & comparative metrics

  • Template-based designs

  • Variety of add-ons for when your business expands

  • In-depth email automations, onboarding sequences, and audience segmentation capabilities

  • Easy to use and personalize for your business

  • Decent deliverability

  • Has a mobile app for designing emails on your phone

  • Frequent software updates!

Cons:

  • High-cost subscription plans (prices here)

  • Prohibits affiliate marketing

  • Limited number of lists

  • Templates can be relatively basic

    • You should have at least some understanding of design to use this platform

  • Limited A/B Testing

  • Frequent updates

    • Can be hard to keep track of if you don’t use the platform frequently

Convertkit overview:

Convertkit is a creator marketing platform that enables business owners to create simple landing pages and manage email marketing campaigns. It is a powerful software that leverages segmentation, personalization, and automation to create custom email workflows that lead to higher audience engagement and conversion rates.

Pros:

  • Excellent deliverability

  • Flexible user management (easy tagging and sorting)

  • In-depth segmentation & sequences

  • Option to offer paid newsletters

  • Visual automation builder to make sequences easier

  • Various form types & rudimentary landing page builder

  • Great support team

  • Affiliate-friendly

Cons:

  • Expensive (please reference prices here)

  • Poor design options

    • They really promote "text based emails" so not much room for design.

  • Limited analytics

  • Limited A/B testing functionality

Flodesk overview:

Flodesk is one of the newest email marketing platforms on the market. It’s most praised for its beautiful templates and easy-to-use interface. We're huge fans of Flodesk here at Big Cat Creative and have been using it since it first came out (and we're pleased it say, it has come a long way since then!).

Pros:

  • Easy to use

  • Simple yet robust analytics

  • Beautiful templates

    • Flodesk puts design at the forefront of their email strategy, which we love! And they make it easy with templates and layout blocks.

  • Code-free

  • Plenty of resources via the Flodesk community

  • Simple pricing structure (more here)

  • Affiliate-friendly

Cons:

So, should you use Squarespace Email Marketing, or another platform?

No one can tell you explicitly which email marketing platform is best for your business, but shopping around and learning about the unique functions of each platform can help you make a more informed decision.

Squarespace Email Marketing is a good start, but it's very limited right now. If you only need basic email features, and you're already using Squarespace, it might be perfect for you.

If you're looking for much more advanced email marketing features, then look into ConvertKit or Maillchimp.

If you want somewhere in between, and value beautiful emails that are easy to design, check out Flodesk, (and don't forget to use our special link to get 50% off your first year!).
