8 Pages you Should Have on Your Website as a Small Business Owner

If you're not a savvy website DIYer (yet!), then figuring out what you actually need to put on your website can be a bit of a challenge...

Creating a website for your business is about much more than just the design (yes, even coming from us web designers!), the content is virtually just as important, if not more! And getting it right is the key to having a website that actually converts by strategically providing your site visitors with all the info they could ever need, right off the bat.

To give you a kickstart to nailing your website first go, we've put together a comprehensive list of the top 8 pages that you should have on your website as a small business owner, and some useful tips for what to include on each one!πŸ‘‡

Home Page

Ok this is a bit of a β€œwell, duh” moment, but a website's home page should be much more than just a page.

Try to think of it as a β€œsummary of everything else on your website” page.

The home page is designed to capture visitors. It should give them insight into what to expect from you and your business, and entice them to stick around to check it out.

The most important thing to have on the home page is exactly what you do, clearly and in only a couple of sentences, giving away just enough to arouse curiosity and invite your visitors to keep scrolling to find out more.

Next, make sure to include a summary of your products or services (with a link to your shop or complete services page), a short bio about who you are (with a link to your about page), links to your social media, and ways to contact you.

There are other helpful elements that you can include too like a testimonial section, a link to your portfolio or blog and your most popular posts, a newsletter sign up, or freebie to giveaway, and anything else that showcases how unique your business is!

About Page

This is another obvious one, but this is one that people really struggle with!

Your customers mostly want to know about your business and how it can help them. But if they have come all the way to the about page, they probably want to know a little bit about you, too.

Feel free to go into a little more detail here about who you are and your story, but don’t forget to really focus on how you want or can help your ideal customers!

Services or Products

Whether you do one or both, you definitely need a separate page to showcase your offerings in the very best light.

Depending on how many services or products you are offering, you may want to break these down even further into separate services and separate product pages in which you can really get into all the nitty gritty details.

You should include as much detail as possible about what you offer (without getting too wordy!). Include deliverables, processes, pricing, testimonials, how your products are different than competitors and how it will help your customer/client.

At the bottom of your services page, close the deal (or get closer to it!) by adding a contact form or 'book now' button so that potential clients can go ahead and get in touch straight away.

Contact Page

Having your email address slapped in the footer just isn’t good enough these days, a full contact page is a must.

Remember that most people have the attention span of a goldfish, they don’t want have to look for a means of contact. If they can’t find it somewhere obvious, they’ll just move along, loosing you a potential client!

Squarespace makes it so easy to include a contact form on your contact page alongside your email address. Contact forms are great because your visitors won't have to navigate away from your site and to their email inbox. They'll be able to get in touch directly in the same spot and with no extra effort! Though, some people are weird about contact forms, so it’s good to include your email address as an option too.

Tip! A great way to manage expectations is to tell them how long it will take you to reply, eg:

β€œThanks so much for reaching out to us! We receive a lot of emails around here, so it might take us 2-3 days to reply - but we will! Talk to you soon!”

We also recommend including the following details (if applicable): your social media links, an address and a map, a phone number, opening hours/hours of operation, FAQs, and helpful resources that your site visitors can navigate to after submitting the form.

Boost your enquiries with a contact page that is sure to impress. Check out some of the contact page designs in our Squarespace TemplatesπŸ‘‡

 FAQs or Support

This might not be a page that you set up straight away, but you’ll notice that as soon as your business starts to grow that you will start getting an unmanageable amount of emails.

You’ll also notice that a lot of these emails are people asking the same questions.

As soon as you notice that you’ve answered the same question more than once, put it on your FAQ page (or wherever else it is relevant on your website). An FAQ page can seriously save you a BUNCH of time wasted on email.

Tip!: We suggest putting the FAQs on your contact page (ABOVE the contact form) or on a separate page with a link to this page also on the contact page (ABOVE the contact form)! eg:

β€œHi there! You can contact me via the form at the bottom of the page, but first make sure you’ve read all of the FAQs below and that I haven’t already answered your question there, thanks!”

Portfolio

If your business is brand new, a portfolio can seem like a hard thing to conjure up, but it’s definitely one of the most important things - ESPECIALLY when you’re a brand new business.

When you’re just starting up you don’t have the word of mouth referrals or testimonials that other, more established companies have. You may not have the work experience either, but you need to at least make it look like you do!

Create a portfolio that will attract your dream clients. Show off everything that you can do. You can show school work, hobby work, free work - it’s not cheating. If you can show that you know what you’re doing, then you know what you’re doing!

Reaching out to people offering free/cheap work is another great way to build up your portfolio while you grow too!

Anyway you can do it, make sure that adding some sort of portfolio is a priority. It would be very rare for a customer to buy from you if they can’t see what they’re buying!

Freebie Page

Freebies are such a great way to grow your contact list with leads that are actually interested in what you’re offering.

So having a dedicated page that promotes your freebie and contains all the details about what’s included and how it will actually benefit those who sign up, is going to be pretty great for your website’s conversion rate!

Once visitors sign up with their email address and join your mailing list, you’ll be free to send them emails with more info about your paid offerings.
